The Roundabout
_________________________________________________________________________________________
The time line for the Round-About is to have the plans finalized and accepted by the end of 2009, then
bids will be let early in 2010.  Estimates at this time are that the project will cost $1.2 million, 10% of
which is at the City's expense.
Diagrams of the current layout at the intersection as well as the proposed layout of the clockwise and a
speed limit of 15 or 20mph is recommended.
The round-about will be one lane, with a "truck curb" of about 2" will be on the inside to allow for
tractor-trailer traffic.  The center of the round-about will be surrounded by standard curb and gutter.
"A" Street will not be cut off as previously proposed, however traffic at 15th and "A" will only be
allowed to enter the round-about; no left hand turns will be allowed.
A new road will be built directly to the west of Cobb Liquor Store that connects 15th Street and 16th
Street between "A" and "B" Streets.  This road will require the demolition of one house and will
accommodate delivery trucks to and from Cobb Liquor and Carroll Glass.
My idea for the intersection, which was rejected, involved remarking the existing roadway and
changing the traffic light signalling.  Most of the accidents reported were 'sideswipe" accidents occurring
on the curve because the lanes were so narrow.
Instead of having the curves be a three-lane path (2 eastbound, one westbound), make the curve only
two lanes (one eastbound, one westbound).  This would widen the roadway and reduce or eliminate the
sideswipe accidents.
Then, and the east bound side of the intersection, the outside line would be the eastbound lane entering
into the curves.  The inside lane would be a "left turn only" lane for traffic turning north on "A" Street.  If
you were going north on "A", you would position your vehicle in the inside lane; if you were traveling
east on 16th through the curves, you would position your vehicle in the outside lane.
All other aspects of the intersection would remain the same.  Click below for my drawing of the changes.
I still oppose the roundabout plan.  The overwhelming majority of citizens are opposed to the
Roundabout, and we are here to provide the services the citizen want.
